Duncan Cruttenden Guitars: Where it all began

9th June 2020 by Duncan Cruttenden

Duncan Cruttenden Guitars was established in November 2019. Here’s a little detail on how a passion for music turned into a guitar building business.

Music has always played a big part in my life whether listening to vinyl or CD’s at home, in the car, or watching gigs at my favourite venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, the De La Warr Pavilion (in Bexhill-on-Sea, pictured) or Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

However, it wasn’t until later in life (well if mid 40’s is later in life) that I decided to learn to play an instrument. Many of my friends and colleagues, over the years, have been guitar players so I guess it was inevitable that I chose to learn to play guitar. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

I love playing the guitar and like most players have always struggled to spend more time practicing with the hectic lifestyles we all lead. For me, it wasn’t just about playing though. I quickly became fascinated with the instrument itself – the wood choices and impact on tone, electronics and the variety of pick-ups available on the market, frets and fret-work, action height, relief and intonation. The list goes on and on…

I decided I wanted to learn more and in 2016 I embarked on a learning journey that continues today. Guitar Tech Courses www.guitartechcourses.com is based in East Sussex and offers professional guitar set-up courses to understand the process of fine tuning the guitar through adjusting neck relief, action height, and intonation amongst many other skills.

After the set-up course I was hooked and was already thinking about how I could enhance my knowledge and how I could start to develop my own guitar business!

A couple of months later I took the GTC ‘build you own guitar’ course giving the student the opportunity to build a Tele, Strat or Jazzmaster style guitar. After 3-days I had built this Tele with an HS pickup configuration.

The next 12 months saw me continue to enhance my skills with these additional builds. These guitars are hand finished with body contours for comfort and a Tru-Oil gunstock finish which gives a unique sheen and feel, and has an subtle impact on the tone of the instrument.

These guitars are currently available through Seaford Guitars on Reverb.com.
