The workshop has moved into a high-stakes phase of construction this month. With several new commissions on the bench, I am transitioning from selecting raw materials to the critical machining and joinery that define the structural integrity of a DC Guitar.
As a UK guitar builder, my focus is always on the “bones” of the instrument. While the final finish catches the eye, it is the precision of the initial routing and the stability of the neck join that determine how a guitar will perform decades from now. These latest updates from the workshop floor offer a look at the rigorous technical steps currently underway for our newest Pavilion and Sovereign models.
The “Point of No Return” – Body Routing and Cavities
One of the most intense stages for any bespoke guitar is the final body silhouette routing. Using a large-diameter router blade to shape the perimeter of the body is a high-stakes process that requires absolute steady-handedness and mechanical precision.
Once the iconic Pavilion and Sovereign silhouettes are established, I move into the internal architecture. This includes:
- Pickup Cavities & Neck Joins: Precision-milled to ensure a “hand-in-glove” fit for the hardware and neck.
- Electronic Channels: Drilling the internal pathways for wiring, ensuring a clean and shielded environment for the electronics.
The Foundation of Stability: 5-Piece Neck Construction
Parallel to the body work, a significant amount of time has been dedicated to the “engine” of the guitar: the neck. For these builds, I am utilising a 5-piece neck stringer design. By laminating multiple sections of timber with contrasting veneers, I create a neck that is significantly more resistant to twisting and temperature changes than a single piece of wood.
The process involves:
- Thicknessing and Veneer Prep: Calibrating each layer to exact tolerances before joining.
- Squaring and Planing: Once joined, the headstock surface and fingerboard face are planed perfectly flat.
This level of preparation is what separates a custom-built instrument from a mass-produced one. A perfectly square edge at this stage ensures that every subsequent measurement – from fret placement to nut slotting – is mathematically spot on.
